Apply For Lectureships in the Social Sciences Core and Civilization Studies

The application deadline for 2021-2022 positions is May 15, 2021. Please note that these positions are only available to registered University of Chicago graduate students.


Required Supplemental Materials

To apply for a lectureship in the Social Sciences Collegiate Division, submit the online application and upload the indicated supplemental materials by May 15, 2021. All documents, with the exception of the recommendation, must be uploaded as a single PDF. Paper applications will not be accepted.

Applicants for lectureships in the Social Sciences Core can apply to only one Social Sciences Core sequence. Applicants for Civilization Studies lectureships can apply in two sequences. You must submit a separate online application for each lectureship. You may use the same supplemental materials for multiple applications, or you may choose to submit a separate set of supplemental materials for each application in order to relate your qualifications to the interests of a particular sequence. To be considered for a lectureship in the Core, you must have completed a full internship in that sequence, or you must be on track to complete the internship before the end of the 2020-21 academic year. In Civilization Studies sequences, students may apply for an internship and a lectureship in the same year, with the understanding that they will only be eligible for the lectureship if they complete the internship requirements first.

Lecturers must be registered PhD students at the University of Chicago while teaching.

Lectureship Re-Applicant Supplemental Materials
You are considered a re-applicant only if you have previously served as a Lecturer in the sequence to which you are applying. If you applied but were not selected or were selected but did not complete the lectureship, you are a new applicant and should follow the guidelines for new applicants below.

  • Cover letter describing your academic interests and reasons for seeking a position in this course, and note your progress toward degree completion and teaching experience. Your letter will be reviewed by several people, and a general salutation (such as "Dear Selection Committee") is appropriate.
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Course evaluations from previous lectureship (retrieve here: https://evaluations.uchicago.edu/)

    *Re-applicants lecturing for the first time in Spring 2021 can omit this requirement.

Lectureship Supplemental Materials for New Applicants
If you applied but were not selected or were selected but did not complete the lectureship, you are a new applicant and should follow the guidelines below.

  • Cover letter describing your academic interests and reasons for seeking a position in this course, and note your progress toward degree completion and teaching experience. Your letter will be reviewed by several people, and a general salutation (such as "Dear Selection Committee") is appropriate.
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Writing sample: seminar paper, dissertation proposal, or dissertation chapter (please limit the sample to 25 pages)
  • Letter of recommendation from a faculty member conversant with your work or who supervised you as an intern, emailed by the writer directly to sscd-gradteaching@lists.uchicago.edu (This letter can also be addressed to the "Selection Committee.")

ALL PARTS OF THE APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MAY 15, 2021.

Select "yes" if you have taught your own section of this sequence or are teaching your own section in Spring 2021.
New lectureship applicants must submit one letter of recommendation. Recommendations are not required for re-applicants. New applicants, please indicate who will send your recommendation. The letter can be emailed by the faculty member directly to sscd-gradteaching@lists.uchicago.edu. It is also acceptable to provide recommendations through a credential service such as Interfolio.Please list the person from whom you have requested recommendation.
